If I'm not clear in my entry, here it is crystallized: Control Room fully captured the esence of the Middle East as I've experienced it. Please see it. 24.07.2004 - 9:17 a.m. All the things I want to tell you - all the important ideas complete with details and proper tone and such - they're all there in Control Room. So rather than me boring you with tales from Jordan, I'll let Control Room do a lot of my talking. (Uhh...for now. I'll bore you out your minds later, don't fret about that.) It's a documentary about Al Jazeera's coverage of this last war in Iraq. Saw it last week when I was in the States. And you know what? It felt like Jordan. All the Arabs I saw on the screen reminded me of friends over here. Most importantly, all they said was an exact replica of everything I've observed, learned and discussed here. Finally something on the screen matches what my eyes've seen. Islam, Arab vs. The World, Victimization, Arab Pride, Freedom...it's all in there. And most, most importantly was just how crazily accurate it was compared to my five months of hanging out and listening to Arabs in Jordan. And, remarkably, it comes off in the calm and methodical way documentaries should. I didn't have time to see Farenheit 9-11, so I can't make a fair comparison. However, I do know that many moderates have remained unconvinced after seeing it. Is this because it's brash and loud? I don't know, I've not seen it. But where F9-11 potentially loses ground as abrasive and line drawing, Control Room is the quiet and informative and almost refreshing. Important traits with lots of yelling going on, right? Oh, and there's this character, Captian Josh Rushing, whose a military media rep who works with the journalists from Al Jazeera. His character arc is so valuable to see. Please see it. It's a worthwile glimpse of the other side.
